Rekha – The Untold Story

As I am a writer, I love sharing my creative instincts with the world through this blog. I will not deny the fact that this blog connects me with the audience who not only loves my work but hates it too, many a time. And I love every single bit of it. But I also strongly believe that if you writes you must learn to read too. Someone else’s work may give you a new idea or inspiration to write. And today, a recent and popular biography inspired me to write this blog. 🙂

I am not a book critique… in fact, you know what? I really don’t want to be one. 🙂 I love reading so I just wanted to share about a biography that I enjoyed reading… ‘Rekha – The Untold Story’!

About Author

Before I start pouring my thoughts and experience about the book, let’s take a look at the background of the author, Yasser Usman.

Yasser Usman is a TV journalist and film commentator. He has worked in some renowned news televisions and has bagged some prestigious awards like Ramnath Goenka Award for Excellence in Journalism. He is a bilingual author of two bestselling books out of which, one is ‘Rekha – The Untold Story’ and another is ‘Rajesh Khanna – The Untold Story of India’s First Superstar’. You may find all the details about the author here.

My views on ‘Rekha – The Untold Story’

Why did I want to read this book?

I have always been a fiction fan so reading a biography was definitely a new experience. I have been a Bollywood movie lover too and loved watching some of the masterpieces given by the industry. Out of all, Umrao Jaan and Silsila are my two most favorites that always had a special place in my heart.

There is no doubt that Rekha always left her strong impression on the silver screen. So as an audience and her fan, I definitely wanted to know about her personal life too. Oh, cmon! We can’t deny that we love peeping in the lives of our favorite stars. I admit it… I am not a liar. 😛

The day I saw the article on social media about the launch of Rekha’s biography, I knew I will buy this one. And the author name added the topping on my reading muffin. 🙂

I have a habit of researching author’s work and reading reviews before buying a book. I am a bit particular. Can’t help it, you know! 😉

First Impression of the book

rekhaI bought this book from Amazon and when I received it, I immediately started turning the pages. Hey, wait! I wasn’t reading… I was smelling it. 😛 What? Don’t you smell a new book? Each one of us does.

While I was busy smelling it, I saw a few old pictures in the book. I always loved the combination of text and visual content. There were some old pictures of Rekha with her husband, some advertisements in which Rekha was featured, and some of her movie banners. So, the first impression of the book was indeed a good one. 🙂

Author’s writing style

As I mentioned earlier, I have been a big fan of fiction. I love storytelling writing style. I am really fond of the engagement and excitement I build while reading a good fiction. And though this book is a non-fiction, I never felt it is.

I loved the writing style of the author. Not for a moment, I felt that it’s a story of a superstar. I connected with it so well. After the launch of the book, I read author didn’t get a chance to interview Rekha. He spoke to her secretary Farzana though. I became even a bigger fan of Yasser Usman after reading this.

Meeting or interacting with the person you are writing about, makes the job of a writer a little easier. Hats off to you Yasser for giving this masterpiece! 🙂

Breaking the nutshell without using a hammer!

In the book, the author clearly mentioned that he referred Rekha’s past interviews. He also interviewed some of the eminent personalities from the Bollywood industry. Writing about a superstar needs a lot of research which is clearly visible in the book.

But my favorite part lies in the quotes and statements made by the eminent personalities Yasser interviewed. As the book moves the controversies about Rekha’s life move too but in a very subtle manner.

The author gave a clear example of ‘writing with dignity’. After all, a journalist is someone who unveils the truth with the facts and Yasser Usman is indeed good in his job. 🙂

Conclusion: Why you should read it?

If you are someone who loves reading good books, fond of well-researched biographies, and prefers good authors’ work then this is a must read. I strongly recommend you to read this book.

I bought it from Amazon. You can buy it too using this link.

Also, if you too enjoy reading then do share your favorite books with me through the comment box below. I would love to read. 🙂
